Organic Rose Gardening

Many rose gardeners are now choosing the organic method of taking care of their roses. People have grown roses for over a thousand years without chemicals, and have managed to have absolutely beautiful rose gardens. By having your yard and gardens organic, you not only have healthier plants including your roses, but you also do it safely for your family’s sake, as well the health of the wildlife and your pets.

The plants, wildlife, and for that the earth has survived quite well for millions of years with no help from humans. The problem occurs when people think that they can do things in a better way than nature can, that things get out of whack. Most of the time plants pull in water and nutrients through their root systems. The plant’s leaves use photosynthesis to process sunlight and water into energy. The soil naturally contains fungus, bacteria, worms, nematodes, along with other kinds of organisms. These organisms help process dead materials into the soil, this make the soil more fertile.

Applying chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers kill the organisms that naturally appear in the soil and alter the natural processes between the soil and the roses. With the helpful bacteria gone the rose plant is open to fungi attacking the roots which can hurt the plant. Your roots can also get hooked on the chemical fertilizers. This means that the roses will need it applied more often.

It is easy and inexpensive to grow roses organically. You don’t have to buy the chemical pest control solutions or the chemical fertilizers. You can successfully tend your roses and give nutrients to your soil without using the chemicals. Certain soils do need some help. The best method of doing this is to add compost to your soil of you newer flower beds or gardens, and mulch or top layer of compost to the older gardens.

You can easily begin a compost pile of your own just by collecting into a pile things like grass clippings, animal manure, dried leaves, plant clippings that are decaying, and scraps from the kitchen as in the peelings from fruits and vegetables, and permit all this to decay and breakdown over time. You could also throw fish heads on this pile if you are not afraid of attracting wild creatures. You can use an open bin or an enclosed container to create this compost pile, in either case you will have to stir or mix the pile, to help it evenly decay and for it to breakdown enough.

Doing garden organically you do not use many of the kinds of pest control. This does not mean that you can’t control pests though. Many times the pesticides kill the beneficial insects along with the harmful ones, remember that the beneficial insects eat many of the harmful ones for you. Certain wasps and ladybugs are two of the beneficial insects that will eat the insects that are considered pests.

Birds will consume lizards, frogs, snakes, and grubs to prevent what problems they can cause. If you need to use a pesticide you should use a natural or organic which aren’t as toxic and equally effective. This type of pesticide can also kill specific insects while not killing other ones.

The main desire behind growing roses should be to produce the largest, highly fragrant, and gorgeous roses that you can. This can be done though using organic ingredients, with the right amount of effort and time spent on your garden. No need to spend all that money on the chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
